Fifty Years of Trying to Be Perfect

From the outside, Christine had spent her life doing what she was supposed to do.

For fifty years, she had tried to be the good girl — the one who didn't get in trouble, did everything right and worked hard to meet the expectations of the people around her.

She was a mom. A wife. A manager. A coach. A friend. A people pleaser.

But somewhere along the way, Christine lost touch with who she was underneath all of those roles.

Then her children began growing up and leaving home.

She was no longer driving to soccer or hockey, managing everyone's schedules or organizing everyone else's lives. As those roles began to shift, Christine was left facing a question she didn't know how to answer: Who am I outside of everyone else?

At the same time, she was navigating one of the most painful periods of her life in her marriage. She describes herself as "lost in the muck" — moving through anger, frustration and devastation while trying to stay stoic and hold everything together.

But beneath the immediate circumstances was something much older. Christine had spent decades looking outside herself for the answer to who she should be.

She knew how to be what was expected of her. She knew how to take care of everyone else. But she had lost touch with her own voice.

The Turning Point

When Christine first considered joining The F.I.T. LIFE Program, she had cold feet. She wasn't sure she was ready.

But instead of waiting until she felt completely certain — or until everything in her life was perfectly resolved — Christine did something different. She trusted the initial nudge and joined anyway.

Christine discovered that transformation wasn't about becoming a perfect version of herself. It was about getting to know the woman underneath the perfectionism, people-pleasing and expectations she had spent fifty years trying to live up to. And perhaps most importantly, she began learning how to ask a question she hadn't known how to answer before: What do I want?

Here's how developing the 8 Essential Life Skills helped Christine stop living according to everyone else's expectations and start discovering who she really is and what she really wants.

1

Self-Connection

Christine started asking, for the first time in decades: Where do I begin and where do I end? She began separating who she actually was from the roles of mom, wife and people pleaser she'd been playing for so long. As she reconnected with herself, she began making space for her own needs, desires and identity outside of what everyone else expected from her.

2

Elevated Mindset

Christine learned to recognize her old patterns without harsh self-judgment. When her people-pleasing habits resurfaced, she could notice them with awareness — "there she is again" — rather than spiraling into shame. The goal was no longer perfection. It was awareness, choice and the ability to respond differently.

3

Emotional Regulation

Christine was navigating anger, frustration and devastation. She learned how to move through difficult emotions without allowing them to run her life. She found herself having far fewer knee-jerk and defensive reactions — creating more space between what she felt and how she chose to respond.

4

Nervous System Regulation

One of Christine's unexpected transformations was discovering what it felt like to simply be comfortable in her own body. She learned to rest without guilt — allowing herself to nap, step back or slow down without the constant mental list demanding that she keep pushing. For someone who had spent decades doing, managing and trying to get everything right, learning that she didn't always have to keep going was a profound shift.

5

Intuitive Discernment

Christine learned to trust her intuition over the endless "shoulds" she had spent much of her life following. She began trusting divine timing and going with the flow of her life instead of constantly pushing, forcing and trying to make things happen. And when she had cold feet about joining the program, she trusted that inner knowing and took the next step anyway.

6

Elevated Communication

Christine learned how to express herself and communicate her needs with greater confidence and clarity — without feeling responsible for how everyone else responded.

She stopped waiting for the perfect words and became more willing to have difficult conversations with honesty, tact and respect. She learned that being authentic didn't mean saying whatever came to mind or disregarding the other person — it meant being able to say what she meant without attacking, avoiding, overexplaining or trying to control their reaction.

She also became better at recognizing when someone else's emotions, expectations or behaviour were pulling her into taking responsibility for something that wasn't hers to carry. Instead of automatically accommodating, fixing or taking the blame, she learned to pause, discern what was actually hers and respond from a place of greater clarity.

She could communicate what was true for her with both honesty and respect. What someone else chose to do with that was theirs.

7

Abundance Focus

Christine began making space for new career opportunities — something more aligned with what lights her up. She left a job that had been exhausting her for years, opening herself to possibilities that felt more aligned with the life she wanted to create.

She also discovered a depth of community and connection in her F.I.T. LIFE group that she hadn't experienced in fifty years of friendships.

By opening herself to new possibilities, Christine began to realize that life could hold more than simply managing, pleasing and meeting expectations. She had dreams and desires of her own — and they were worthy of pursuing.

8

Aligned Action

Christine didn't wait until she felt completely ready. She showed up with cold feet, said yes to the process and kept taking steps toward the life she wanted to create. That also meant learning that aligned action wasn't always about doing more. Sometimes it meant stepping back. Resting. Saying no. And choosing not to force herself through something simply because she believed she should.

Christine

"I lived 50 years of my life trying to be perfect, trying to be the good girl, the one that doesn't get in trouble, the one that does everything she's supposed to do.
From where I was to now, I am a completely different person."
