Why do so many incredibly capable, motivated, intelligent and determined women struggle to follow through on the things they genuinely want?
There’s a lot of talk about needing more self-discipline and willpower, and honestly, there’s truth to that. But how do you actually develop more of it?
Consider something you genuinely want to create in your life. Maybe it’s:
✔ A more connected, reciprocal relationship.
✔ A business or career you want to grow.
✔ A level of health and energy you’ve been longing for.
✔ Simply more peace and ease in your everyday.
Or maybe you want all of it!
So what truly makes the difference between the women who turn visions like this into reality and those who never seem to, despite wanting it just as much?
In my two decades of coaching and mentoring women, I’ve learned that it comes down to one foundational thing, the thing that makes self-discipline and willpower possible in the first place:
Inner capacity.
The Hard but Necessary Truth
Turning your ideal vision into reality isn’t always going to feel good.
In fact, it’s guaranteed that you’ll experience frustration, disappointment, overwhelm, sadness, loneliness, irritation and uncertainty along the way.
You may be misunderstood or judged. People may disagree with you or simply not see you clearly, and you may have to make choices that others around you don’t understand or agree with.
That’s exactly why developing your inner capacity matters so much.
If every uncomfortable feeling causes you to abandon the choice that was aligned with your vision, your vision will never become your reality.
And it’s not because you don’t deserve it. It’s simply because you haven’t yet developed what’s required to consistently choose it.
More often than not, it isn’t the outer skills, strategies or knowledge that determine whether we follow through on what we say we want. It’s the inner skills.
And this is where I think we need to look at discipline and willpower differently.
I don’t see discipline as being able to force yourself to do something you don’t want to do.
I see it as what becomes possible when you have the inner capacity to consistently choose in alignment with what you want, even when your circumstances, emotions or old patterns are pulling you in another direction.
Inner Capacity Determines What Becomes Possible
The good news is that inner capacity isn’t a fixed trait you either have or don’t have.
It’s something you can develop at any time. It’s a skillset, and like any other skillset, it grows through awareness, practice, experience and repetition.
I’ve seen this over and over again in my role helping women navigate the transformational process.
The women who actually turn their visions into reality aren’t necessarily the ones who never struggle, never get overwhelmed or always know exactly what to do. Rather, they’ve developed the inner capacity to navigate those moments differently. They can:
- Feel something without immediately reacting to it.
- Experience discomfort without automatically trying to make it go away.
- Stay connected to what matters to them, even when fear shows up.
- Have difficult conversations without losing their cool or losing themselves.
- Be accountable for how they think, feel, act and respond without blaming others or avoiding responsibility.
- Make decisions without needing everyone else to agree with them.
- Recover and fine tune when things don’t go according to plan.
- Recognize when they’re falling back into an old pattern and choose differently.
- Trust themselves enough to keep choosing their next right step, even when it’s not convenient.
- Feel confident in who they are and comfortable in their own skin.
- Be open-minded and abundance focused
- Trust in a greater intelligence at work in their life and stay open to what they can’t yet see or understand.
- Choose courage over comfort when the two pull in different directions.
- Ask for and allow support to overcome their fears and limits.
That is inner capacity.
And the greater your inner capacity, the more choices become available to you, which means you’re far more able to consistently make the choices that move you toward the life you want.
Here’s why that matters so much…
Whether you want nourishing, reciprocal relationships, a certain level of impact in your business or career, financial abundance, a particular lifestyle or optimal wellbeing, each of those will require its own set of aligned choices.
Quite simply, if you want X, X will require certain choices made consistently over time.
Not perfectly, and rarely in one big leap. More often, it’s hundreds of micro-choices over time, and consistently making them requires a whole lot more than willpower. It requires real inner capacity.
So the question isn’t “How do I get X?” It’s:
“What will I need to develop in myself to consistently make the choices that create X?”
Becoming the Match
I want to be really clear about something, especially because you’re a woman navigating the complexities of real life, real relationships and real demands.
Developing your inner capacity doesn’t mean you simply decide what you want and then discipline your way into creating it. I think that’s the illusion that’s keeping so many well intentioned women stuck.
You also need a clear and compelling vision, so you know what you’re moving toward and why it matters to you so when the choices get difficult, your vision gives you something to come back to. It reminds you why you’re willing to tolerate the discomfort of doing something differently.
This is also where accountability, real-time mentorship and community come in, because we don’t develop capacity in isolation.
Sometimes you need someone to reflect back what you can’t yet see for yourself.
Other times you need in the moment guidance while you’re learning to do something differently, or someone to hold you to the commitment you made to yourself when you feel like giving up or giving in.
And sometimes you simply need to be surrounded by people who understand what you’re choosing to create and aren’t invested in keeping you exactly as you were.
In other words, turning your vision into reality isn’t about telling yourself you need more discipline or willpower.
It’s about creating the conditions that help you develop the inner capacity to become the woman who can consistently make the choices your vision requires.
This is what we call Becoming the Match.
You must become the match for your vision before your vision can become your new reality. After all, if you were already capable of consistently creating and sustaining your vision with the capacity you have now, you’d already be living it.
Makes sense right?
That doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you or that you aren’t enough. It simply means there are some skills you haven’t fully developed or integrated yet.
And that’s where your breakthroughs are waiting for you.
The Inner Capacity Behind Your Vision
Developing the inner capacity to become the match for your greatest vision is the foundation of our signature transformational experience The F.I.T. LIFE Program.
Over the years, I’ve identified 8 interconnected life skills that sit at the heart of this inner capacity. They aren’t eight isolated skills you check off a list.
Instead, they influence and support one another, and when you strengthen them together through a fully guided process, turning your vision into reality becomes the natural result.
Ultimately, your inner capacity determines what becomes possible for you.
Vision fulfillment doesn’t happen because you suddenly become more worthy, finally prove that you deserve it or develop some magical ability to bypass challenges altogether.
It happens because you’ve developed the inner skills that allow you to keep choosing in alignment with what matters to you, over and over again, especially when life gets hard.
And that, to me, is what true vision fulfillment is about. It isn’t about becoming someone who never experiences challenges, but becoming someone who can navigate them with greater skill, grace and ease when they inevitably come.
